Getting Ready for Sunday (March 6, 2011)
There is something special about the people of God coming together for worship (Hebrews 10:24-25). Thus, we hope that Sundays at New City are a highlight of your week. In an effort to help you get more out of it, we're posting a short preview of the upcoming Sunday gathering each week.
This upcoming Wednesday is Ash Wednesday, and the start of the Lenten season. Lent is meant to be a wake up call - a call not to despair, but to repent of our sin, and to run to God for mercy. We'll focus on that theme this week in our Sunday gathering, confessing our sins together using the words of the prophet Joel. The good news is that the arc of worship doesn't end by confessing our sins, but rather culminates in remembering God's love for us by sending Jesus to die in our place. We'll celebrate that this week in the Lord's Supper.
The teaching will come from John 14:15-26 as we focus on what it means to confess "I believe in the Holy Spirit." Read this passage to prepare for worship and check out this song "God the Spirit." Use the words of the song as a prayer to prepare you to come to worship on Sunday morning.
Other songs we'll sing this week include: "Arise, My Soul, Arise," "The Lord is King," "My Savior, I Behold Thy Life," and "Love Me To the End."
